Report: Over 150,000 join in annual Vietnamese pilgrimage

August 21, 2007

From Catholic World News:

More than 150,000 Vietnamese, including Buddhists as well as Catholics, joined in the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of La Vang for the feast of the Assumption, the AsiaNews service reports.

Well over 100 priests concelebrated Mass at the famous Marian shrine on August 15. The sanctuary at La Vang, built at the site where the Virgin appeared in 1798, has survived wars and storms and remains the country’s most beloved pilgrimage site. In 1998, about 200,000 Catholics made the trip to La Vang to celebrate the bicentennial of Mary’s appearances there, defying government efforts to discourage travel.
